Serious Game Engine Shootout
A comparative analysis of technology for serious game development
- Richard Carey

OLIVE: From There to Here

The OLIVE engine began with There.com, a persistent virtual destination where members have been meeting new people in a 3D world for nearly a decade. In 2003, company CEO Robert Gehorsam restructured the company to create Makena Technologies which operates There.com using the original engine, and Forterra, which has built on the original code to create a serious game engine and platform called OLIVE. In addition to its use by military, intelligence and government clients, OLIVE has been used to create an emergency life saving game for high school students.

Gehorsam explains, “The OLIVE platform is a suite of tools and interfaces that allow non-programmers to rapidly create application specific content and scenarios - the key to agile game development. Working with OLIVE customers can create realistic virtual world content and plug-in functionality to meet a wide range of simulation needs.”

He continues: “An API layer enables reuse of existing content, integration with third party applications, and leverages popular third party tools. The open nature of the OLIVE Platform allows customers to create powerful multi-resolution and multi-fidelity federated simulation environments.”

“Persistent 3D virtual environments built with OLIVE enable teams and organizations to train, plan, rehearse, communicate and collaborate – just as they would in the real world. OLIVE's distributed client-server architecture enables these simulations to scale easily from single user applications to much larger environments supporting thousands of concurrent users,” adds Gehorsam.

Forterra Studios supports OLIVE customers through all phases of development, from requirements gathering, to implementation, to operational support of large-scale solutions. Forterra also builds and operates custom environments for customers interested in turnkey solutions.
